Siljan´s majestic landscape beats most things; a countryside which springs from one of the world’s biggest meteorite impacts over 350 million years ago, creating a 10 km deep crater. Over time the crater bottom raised itself and, as wind and weather wore away at the newly formed nature, created conditions for what today is called the Siljan ring. 

With luck, you can find old fossils in limestone quarries in Rättvik and Orsa. Make a visit to Rättvik’s Cultural Centre if you want to learn more about the meteorite impact.

We offer several first-rate hiking, cycle and riding tracks and paths suitable for both shorter and longer trips. Pack your rucksack and take a turn; maybe you’ll stop a while to fish or take a swim. Cycles can be rented in several places; and there are organisers who offer short and long riding trips. Maps, with cycle and hiking tracks and paths, are available to buy at the tourist offices.

Wintertime, too, has its special delights, with four family-friendly alpine skiing facilities, as well as miles of well prepared cross-country tracks, these often associated with the alpine facilities. .
